Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Greater Dandenong Edible Gardens Project.  The project is co-ordinated by Paul Fogarty and Kim Glasgow from the Permablitz network.  The project is sponsored by the Dandenong Development Board, and supported by the City of Greater Dandenong, Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Planning and Community Development.  This site has been set up to help people get together and have fun learning about, designing and implementing suburban permaculture systems.  Our focus is edible gardens, and our ultimate aim is to make the suburbs edible enough such that should food become unaffordable, we don’t even notice.

Sponsored by the Dandenong Development Board, a localised Permablitz group has recently started in Greater Dandenong.  This project began in May, and we would love to hear from any people in Greater Dandenong who would be keen to host a permablitz at their place, or would like to attend local permablitzes.  Therefore, if you're from Dandenong, Noble Park, Keysborough, Springvale, Lyndhurst or Bangholme and would like to host or attend a local blitz please email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with the subject heading 'Dandenong Permablitz'.

Permablitz Defined
Monday, 10 July 2006

Permablitz: An informal gathering involving a day on which a group of at least two people come together to achieve the following:

  • create or add to edible gardens where someone lives
  • share skills related to permaculture and sustainable living
  • build community networks
  • have fun

For more background on Permablitz see Asha Bee's article originally published on Energy Bulletin and Katherine Kizilos' article for Melbourne's The Age newspaper . To learn more about permaculture see permaculture as defined in wikipedia.

Each permablitz is part of a longer process including a pre-blitz design visit or visits, prior organisation of materials needed for the blitz, and after the blitz follow up visits to see how people are going with their new gardens.  This means that permablitzes stay true to permaculture design, which is always an extended process in which all action is informed by prior observation and reflection.

This site is being set up to facilitate others to get permablitzes happening and to document permablitzes to date as a resource for others.  Stay tuned for site updates and feel free to use this site to organise your own permablitz!
