Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Greater Dandenong Edible Gardens Project.  The project is co-ordinated by Paul Fogarty and Kim Glasgow from the Permablitz network.  The project is sponsored by the Dandenong Development Board, and supported by the City of Greater Dandenong, Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Planning and Community Development.  This site has been set up to help people get together and have fun learning about, designing and implementing suburban permaculture systems.  Our focus is edible gardens, and our ultimate aim is to make the suburbs edible enough such that should food become unaffordable, we don’t even notice.

With less than 2 weeks of advertising we were amazed and thrilled to have 17 Greater Dandenong locals join us for an all day "Grow Your Own Food" Workshop on September 7th.  The course covered:

* Great reasons to grow your own food (for inspiration)

* Basic edible garden design - where to grow your fruit and veges

* How to make and keep your soil healthy - with a focus on compost and worm farms

* Organic Pest management

* How to plant seeds and seedlings

* Productive urban animals - including chooks & bees

* Common problems

It's been great to see many of the folk who came along on this day at the events that we've had since.  Friendships, as well as gardening skills, have developed since.
