Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Greater Dandenong Edible Gardens Project.  The project is co-ordinated by Paul Fogarty and Kim Glasgow from the Permablitz network.  The project is sponsored by the Dandenong Development Board, and supported by the City of Greater Dandenong, Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Planning and Community Development.  This site has been set up to help people get together and have fun learning about, designing and implementing suburban permaculture systems.  Our focus is edible gardens, and our ultimate aim is to make the suburbs edible enough such that should food become unaffordable, we don’t even notice.

We met Tess at the "Grow Your Own Food" workshop in September - she had never grown her own food but was ready and courageous enough to set aside the time to get started and learn as she went.  THis blitz was about helping to kick start Tess' food growing journey!  (NOVEMBER UPDATE: Tess' herb and vege patch is going superbly and her food growing confidence has developed to the point that she led the installation of a vege bed at Dandenong Permablitz#8 - Great work Tess!)

This Permablitz was attended by over 20 volunteers from 13 different suburbs.  We began with a great round of introductions before getting to work on building both a 60cm high raised vege bed and a ground level herb and vege area at Tess' back door.  The raised bed was slow progress, but the ground bed was soon prepared and looking great.  A team of volunteers set their sights on the West facing front yard, where two deciduous fruit trees were to be planted to block the Summer afternoon sun from entering two large windows.  The area was cleared, compost and blood & bone were added and watered in, woodchip mulch was laid, companion ground-covers and flowering plants were planted, and finally the two apple trees were planted.

It took longer than expected, but thanks to some great persistence and dedication the raised bed was eventually finished off and later planted out by Tess and Kim.

Great work by all.
