25 volunteers gathered at the house of Elizabeth and her 5 children in Noble Park to convert their lawn and tree area into an edible garden. It was great to see 5 past hosts of Permablitzes coming along to help out - there was a great mix of regular volunteers and first-time volunteers aged from about 5 years old to 75 years old. This diverse bunch achieved the following: After introductions and an explanation of the task ahead, the volunteer team split into 3 groups. One group, led by Dan, set about creating a large no-dig vege garden area near Elizabeth's backyard. Tess led another group who weeded and improved an existing East facing garden area, and planted out a beautiful vege, herb and flower area. Paul worked with the third group as we chopped back some broom trees (later used as mulch), removed a large rugged rose and planted out an orange tree and a lime tree. It was great to see the gardening confidence of some of the regular volunteers increasing, and special thanks go to Patrick, Dan, Dan, Terry and Stuart for leading the way toward a healthy vege and fruit tree area. Lunch included tasty home-made Sudanese Corn salad among other treats. Lunch was followed by another great workshop by Dan from Aussies Living Simply, before we all went about planting out the herbs, veges and flowers. Finally, with many having retired early due to the heat, a small crew planted out two apple trees on the Western side of the house - to block the Summer afternoon sun from heating the house too much. A great day was had by all and the result was a backyard with huge potential for fruit and vege production. |
